Who Hugh Lost Out To: Reviewing the Best Actor Emmy Nominations
The outrage continues over the “revised” Emmy process. Change to the system, which were supposed to bring some fresh faces into the mix, seem have to done little to fix the problem. It’s probably better than the Bowl Championship Series, but not much.
Anyway, let’s take a look at who was nominated over Hugh Laurie in the Best Actor category.
- Christopher Meloni as Detective Elliot Stabler in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit - I’ll admit that I’m a Law and Order fan from way back, but I won’t argue against Meloni nomination. I always liked the way he bubbled and frothed, like pasta with the lid on too tight, just waiting to spill over. Well, this past year, he was given the opportunity to boil over, and he did well in the spotlight.
- Denis Leary as Tommy Gavin in Rescue Me - This is one I haven’t seen, since I don’t have cable… but I’ve heard good things.
- Peter Krause as Nate Fisher in Six Feet Under - Again, I haven’t seen it, but this strikes me as a carry-over. Six Feet Under was everywhere… last year… and the year before; but I haven’t heard the buzz this year.
- Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer in 24 - Here’s another one I haven’t seen, but only because I never wanted to jump into the middle or wind up missing an episode.
- Martin Sheen as President Josiah Bartlet in The West Wing - If Krause was nominated on reputation, then this has got to be a sentimental vote. I haven’t watched the show since Aaron Sorkin when into rehab back in 2001, but hasn’t the storyline revolved around who is replacing Pres. Bartlet? I scarcely recall seeing Sheen in a promo last season. If his performance was indeed Emmy worthy, wouldn’t Best Supporting Actor have been a better fit?
