House is Right

House Episode Recap: Meaning (HOU-301)

by Cory on September 5th, 2006

Official Teaser:
A pain-free House opens his third season on the run. Literally. After eight weeks of rehab from the shooting, he’s running to the hospital, where two patients await him. One is a mute quadriplegic (the result of brain cancer) who drove his wheelchair into a pool. The other is a paralyzed young woman who injured herself in a yoga accident. But there’s no evidence of spinal damage. House wants both cases because, he says, he wants to help the patients. Arlene: Kathleen Quinlan.

Recap: (after the jump)

Backyard BBQ. Dad’s zoned in a wheelchair. Mom suggests sitting closer to the pool…

Not that close! Dad takes a nose dive straight into the deep end.

Back from commercial and House… is jogging… through the park! He’s all sweaty and out of breath. And running without a limp.

Cut to Wilson and Cuddy, who are attempting to choose House’s first case back from rehab. House picks both the cute yoga quadrapeligic with no broken neck, and pool Dad.

At the white board, the team wants to commisserate; House wants to get to business. Hmm… the blood stain is still on the carpet in his office. And House wants Dad to have a tendon surgery “to make him more comforable.” And then House watches the surgery with the family. Who is this man with the steely blue eyes and graying stubble?

Onto yoga girl. The boys are giving testing her paralysis, and she “flinches.” House takes it the next step, and sets her foot on fire. She screams, so House figures she’s faking…

… until her chest cavity begins filling with fluid. (House tries to scare it out of her, but no luck; the problem is real.)

After assigning the boys to unzip yoga girl’s spine in search of a tumor, House checks up on Dad.

Mom to House: “You’re the fist doctor that’s ever given a damn about the quality of his life.”

Who is this man?

Cuddy puts a halt to the surgery, and House backs down mighty easily. Oh, I see, he’s doing the end around. Surgery’s under way, and House sees fit to intrude. Yoga girl has a funky toenail, which leads House to scurvy. Turns out her diet is low in Vitamin C. Scurvy can damage hair and nails, and it causes fluid to build up in the extremities.

Back to Dad, who is getting ready to go home. He starts drilling mom about why she cares for him.

House: “So, caring for him doesn’t give you any fulfillment, but not caring for him would make you miserable.”

Mom starts to pick Dad up… and Dad talks! (Well, as much as a guy who hasn’t moved or spoken in years can.)

Yoga girl has gone home, so House sets the team into dissecting Dad’s medical history.. while he works on his skateboarding. (Something like a 180 kick-flip off a parkbench.) House looks over the board and picks a pancreatic legion.

During the scope his throat closes down. The team says spasm; House says no. He wants to scan the lining of his brain, and Cameron is rebelling. She makes House get the consent, while she stands over his shoulder warning, cautioning, and generally poo-pooing all of House’s positive spin.

Cameron: “He could die.”

Mom: “He’s already dead.”

The scan seems to be going well, when Dad starts bleeding from his ear!

House is still searching, and he wants to cut open Dad’s head. Cameron says no; Foreman says no; Chase says, “How big of an incision?”

Cuddy puts a stop to it, so House visits Wilson for the end around. he says no. House tries guilt. “My leg’s been hurting.” Wilson tells him, “Duh! You’re forty, and you’ve been skateboarding non-stop. No go on the vicadin.”

So, House starts jogging, and gets a wild idea about temperature regulation. He knocks on Cuddy’s window in the middle of the night… and she still says no. Not even to a simple cortisal shot.

Next morning, Dad’s on his way out. House is sulking in his office, but Cuddy decides to try the shot. It works! Dad stands up and it’s hugs all around. Only, Wilson won’t let Cuddy tell House.

Wilson: “He got lucky. Just because he was right, doesn’t mean he wasn’t also wrong.”

Cuddy: “I see him everyday. What am I going to do.”

Wilson: “Relax. Everybody lies.”

Late that night, House is playing vampire. He sneaks across the balcony and into Wilson’s office… where he writes himself a prescription for vicadin.

    1. They totally have a new fashion director. Where was House’s trademark t-shirt and blazer? And the pants on the first suit were SO bad.
    2. “Everybody lies” is a total House-ism
    3. Major addiction. I reread the last season and yes, it is two-pronged. When he took a case over morphine? To him, the high is what he wants, whether it’s vicadine or an exciting case.

Although I must say, House DOES look good in a slightly-unbuttoned dress shirt and slacks, I miss the snarky vintage T’s and jeans. He kept the sneakers. Maybe his new wardrobe signifies his new attitude change? And is therefore probably temporary?
Anyways… I think TPTB are setting up Wilson as this season’s bad guy (besides David Morse). Which sucks, because he’s my favourite character next to House and Steve McQueen. But maybe this turn of events will play out for the better; maybe Wilson HAS to be the bad guy so we can see his dark side and near the end a strengthening of his and House’s relationship.
