House Mistake - Lines in the Sand
OK, I had a reader alert me to a potential error in the episode “Lines in the Sand.”

Edited from my chat:
Tags: fox, fox-tv, house, House Mistakeshewolfe: okay … House was trying to get the Austistic kid to put on an anthesia mask, so he had the person crank it to max and put it on himself, then the kid, back and forth until the kid passed out. But … then he took the mask off! If he did that the kid should have woken up … but he didn’t.
me: ahhh… you need a continuous supply of the sleepy gas?
shewolfe: yes - no gas, no sleep

Hmmmm….I thought that, too, watching it. Figured I just didn’t know as much as I thought I did, which is entirely possible….

I don’t think they could give the child a continous supply of sleeping gas, as that would kill him.
Even autistic kids need oxygen, which sleeping gas does not contain.

They only gas you for a few minutes. After that, there is a drip like an IV that keeps you sedated.

Oh please, like that’s the worst medical mistake?
How about the 20-per-minute chest compressions, the 90% survival rate from cardiac arrest and the defibrilation of asystole?
I have to supress my annoyance at the show’s medical idiocy to enjoy it :-D

Its not a mistake, they dont keep the gas on all the time, just to send you asleep and then its the oxygen mask or tube that takes over. Trust me, I’ve had it.

you only need a few second of sleeping gas to be knocked out you do not need it continuously !!!!!!!!!!!! re-learn your medical basics
Autistic kids do not need more oxygen then ragular kids. Any way, the point of the gas is to knock them out, so there is mainly anthestetic, but there is still air, any ways, it takes a whole five minutes for you to pass out from lack of oxygen. Trust me, I know.

actually, i think he used an inhalation type of anesthesia. that is whyhe had difficulty walking straight after the kid fell asleep. that is what you get if exposed with forane. that is highly possible.

Wasn’t there a mistake in this latest episode, “Frozen”? House calls the patient, the doctor in Antarctica he’s treatign remotely, by her first name, and when Wilson queries this, House retorts “First names speed things along…. Bob!”
As any fule know, the character’s name is James Wilson (so, House should have called him “Jim”). “Bob” is short for Robert (Sean Leonard), which is the actor’s name, not the character’s.

They could use a sleepinducing machine that needs to be used continuesly, the machine mixes N2O and O2 so the patient doesn’t sufficate… but if they use this the patient doesn’t wake up immediately but after maybe 10-15 seconds. They can use the same machine with a big concentration of N2O to initialize the sleep, then they take off the mask and continue with IV
