House Recap: Half-Wit
Here’s the recap of Tuesday night’s House episode: Half-Wit. I was so excited for it to air because, as I’ve mentioned before, I’m a huge Dave Matthews fan. I was a bit disappointed that his role was so limited, but I loved the scenes that he did with Hugh and the piano. Wonderful!

The show started by showing Dave Matthews’ character getting ready to perform on stage as a pianist. He couldn’t button his own shirt, so his father had to do it for him.

During the performance, he had pain and problems with his hand, forcing him to stop, mid-concert. Of course, the next people he’ll meet are House and the team.

The team was awakened extremely early to deal with this new patient. House is fascinated with the fact that when he was 9 years old, he was in an accident and lost a lot of the function of his brain, except for the fact that he became a musical savant. You know House, if it’s something unusual, he wants to get to the bottom of it.

Foreman examined the patient to see what motor skills had been affected.

I thought this was very funny, so I had to capture it for you.

And I’m sure this shot won’t be on the cover of Dave’s next album either, but it made me giggle.

Meanwhile, House was seeing a girl in the clinic who came in with a blister on her foot. House not only told her that he knew she was bulimic, but asked her to tie the tourniquet on him so he could draw some of his own blood for some tests. I’ll get back to this in a minute.

Here’s the scene I loved the most. House brought a piano into the patient’s room to see how he played. During the session, they played some pieces together. Then House played a piece he had written when he was a kid, but had never known how to finish. The patient played the perfect finish for the piece. You could tell that House was impressed.

House and Foreman gave the patient an MRI because House said that he wanted to “see the music.”

Because of the suspicious blood test and some unexplained phone calls, the team began to wonder if House was intending to take a job in Boston. Chase & Cameron broke into his apartment to snoop. One of the things they found there was an old yearbook and this is the photo of House.

Chase asked Cameron if she wanted to join him in the bedroom and she told him that she was surprised that he would worry that House would find them in his home, but not worried about finding them in his bed. (typical…) ;-)

Cuddy used the phone numbers that Chase and Cameron had found in House’s apartment to call Boston. She found out that he wasn’t going there to get a job, he was going to be a patient.

She asked Wilson who the doctor in Boston was, and he told her his specialty was brain cancer. So now everyone at the hospital was upset with House for not telling them he had brain cancer and was dying. He just acted like nothing was wrong…which upset them even more.

Of course, House put the patient through a whole ton of tests to try to see what was going on in his brain.

Cameron, who thinks that House is dying, tries to comfort/seduce him by kissing him. As we all know, she’s the type to fall for the fragile and dying… House wasn’t that impressed.

He went to Cuddy’s house in the middle of the night to tell her that the patient needed a hemispherectomy (remove one half of his brain, hence the episode’s title.) She told him that she was sorry about his illness and gave him a hug. Here’s where it got cute. He grabbed her butt during the hug.

And she seemed to like it. I guess now it’s clear why House wasn’t that interested in Cameron’s kiss…
Then Cuddy walked back toward her bedroom and House started to follow her. She told him that he should call the “Make a Wish” foundation. He smiled and turned to leave. (Cute!)

Then came the real shocker of the episode. It turned out that House admitted that he didn’t have cancer at all. He was trying to convince the doctors in Boston that he had it so he could get an injection in the pleasure center of his brain. GEEZ! I guess his drug problem is worse than even thought! The team was very upset with him for letting them think he was going to die.
Wilson told House that he should reach out to the people that care about him, instead of looking for chemical ways to find happiness.

After the big surgery, the patient was able to button his own shirt for the first time in many years. House’s diagnosis and remedy had worked after all. (As if we ever doubted!)

At the end of the episode, House was walking somewhere alone at night and went past a cafe where he saw the team sitting and laughing together. He paused and then reached for the doorknob to go in and join them.
I loved this episode! It had me scared about House’s medical situation (even though I know that the show has been picked up for another season…) and it was great to see how concerned and upset the rest of the doctors were about him. I hope he starts to realize how much they all care.
And Dave Matthews was good in the part, even if it didn’t give him much chance to do a lot of dialog.
What did you think? Did you like the scene with the piano in the patient’s room? How about the scene with Cuddy in her house? Leave a comment to share your thoughts!

Cuddy and House did not kiss. They hugged. …as much as I wish they kissed.
The episode was great overall. I loved the piano playing scene. Both were really good.
I had tears coming down my face while watching the episode, but I got so angry when it was all a lie and that he did all that to get high. Wow… his drug addiction is actually pretty scary.

Good catch!! Thanks for keeping me honest! ;-)
I agree, that’s about as extreme an addiction as I want to imagine. I wonder what the show has in store for us in regards to the drug thing.
I think we can see some real forshadowing to the House/Cuddy hook-up…

LoL yeah. He enjoyed it. I don’t think he liked the stabbing part.
I did, however, feel bad for Hugh. He was asked to kiss someone who has about half his age. That must have been pretty uncomfortable for him, but I guess he did it anyways. I’m looking forward to the House/Cuddy stuff when the show returns after ANOTHER 3-week hiatus. Y’know… I can manage 2 weeks, but 3 weeks?! Gimme a break!

I liked your recap, but I doubt he’ll change.
We love the show because he’s acerbic, because he’s a jerk, because he makes tissue paper out of people’s feelings.
He can’t become normal, it would be a death of the show. Though a bit of us does want him to become “like everyone else” and love and care, its not really him.
I think, the character, Gregory House, experiences a sort of self-gratification over his loneliness and superiority. He’s gifted enough to be alone, he’s gifted enough to survive on his own rules and terms, and I doubt he would like to give that up.
I know I wouldn’t.

HOUSE is the greatest show ever (IMO)! I liked this episode as I have never seen one that I didn’t however, even though I like Dave Matthews his part screwed with things in my opinion because it was a different character than he played in HOUSE during season 1!?

I so loved this episode, it was positively brilliant. I was so fascinated when House played a musical piece and then Dave played the exact same thing. [Honeslty, I didn’t know who Dave Mattews was until I saw an interview he was in for this episode a few days ago.] Hugh looks so a piece when he’s playing music.
When Cuddy called the doctors in Boston, you could see that she really cared about House, otherwise she would’ve just left him alone and let him be House.
Next, when Cameron came into House’s office and talked then I was like,”Oh, this isn’t going to be that intresting…” But, when House stood up and Cameron moved closer and the soothing music tht indcated a love/emotional scene is coming up, then I started to really interested. The Cameron went for the goal. The kiss was so sweet, House looked like he was enjoying it for about two seconds there, but then she got caught. Poor Cameron.

When Hugh went to Cuddy’s house and then they hugged, it was so cute! :) [They would make such a gorgeous couple :D, I would love it!] But, when House pulled the grab the butt stunt, it was hilarious! And everyone could tell she loved it! [who wouldn’t?] House being House wanted somemore [well any guy woul do that, who could resist Cuddy?….] but was rejected by Cuddy’s when he told him”Call the Make-A-Wish foundation.” [that made me laugh, alot.] I’m sure she rejected him with love :)
