House is Right

House Recap Episode 4.01 - Alone

by Lynn on September 25th, 2007

The show began with a building collapsing with people inside.

Then we see House in his office playing his electric guitar. Cuddy enters and tells him that he has a patient who was pulled out of the rubble of the building. He tries to ignore her, but she persists.

She tells him that the patient has a fever of 104. He said he can’t take the case because he has no team. She tells him to hire one.

Cuddy: Have you even interviewed anybody?

House: You’d test drive a car before you buy it. You have sex before you get married. I can’t hire a team based on a 10-minute interview. What if I don’t like having sex with them?

LOL! I love this show! Thank goodness it’s back!! :-)

He agrees to diagnose her by the end of the day and Cuddy will leave him alone for a week.

Then he starts writing symptoms on the white board and talking about theories to the janitor. The janitor suggests lupus. House decides to check on it.

He took the janitor with him to examine the patient and has him wearing a white lab coat and called him Dr. Buffer. (What a hoot!)

The janitor refuses to break into her house for less than $50. (He has principles…)

Wilson goes with House to investigate at the patient’s house and finds her diary. He thinks she’s on antidepressants and that they need to treat her differently because of it.

The family of the patient sees the janitor and complains to Cuddy. He gives the diary to the boyfriend. The mother and boyfriend don’t want her treatment to change. HE manages to manipulate them into doing what he wants.

Then he realizes that his guitar is missing. There’s a ransom note for the guitar and he knows that Wilson has kidnapped his guitar until he starts to interview applicants for his team.

The patient woke up and they find out that she was, in fact, on antidepressants, just like House said. Then she started to get worse suddenly.

House gives in and tells Wilson that he’ll do the interviews. Wilson tells him that he won’t get back the guitar until the interviews are done.

House tested the patient’s heart and told the family that she is going through withdrawal from alcoholism. The boyfriend disagrees and the mother tells them to treat her.

House had Wilson paged with an urgent code and when he got to the hospital, they said it wasn’t them. House was at his Wilson’s home trying to find the guitar. The war had begun. ;-)

House got a package containing a piece of a guitar. When he took it to Wilson, the reaction was the same as if there was a human head in the box. (LOL!)

House determined that the patient had had an abortion without telling the boyfriend and the boyfriend left.

He then went to get one of Wilson’s patients and moved him to another area of the hospital without telling Wilson. (Funny…)

House then went to the ER and started asking the doctors there for ideas about the patient. Cuddy had sent out a memo telling everyone to refuse to help him. One of the doctors followed him to the hall and talked about the patient. He told her to send her resume to him and he wouldn’t look at it.

The patient continued to confound the doctors and House kept getting input from all the other doctors in the hospital. Meanwhile, Wilson discovered the missing patient. He flips out and House gets the idea about what to do for his patient.

He figured out that the patient wasn’t the person he thought it was. Megan had been killed in the accident, this was another girl. No wonder they were so perplexed by everything about her. How sad.

Cuddy then demanded that House hire a team so that the next patient wouldn’t have to go through so much while he was trying to figure things out by himself.

The show ended with him telling 40 candidates in a lecture hall that he was going to test them in mean and sometimes illegal ways and that most of them would be gone before it was over.

The preview for next week was hilarious! Cuddy asked him about the 40 people in the room when he could only hire three and he leaned into the room and shouted, “Row D, you’re fired!”

I don’t know about you, but I’m thrilled that House if back again. It was a long, boring summer waiting for the season to start again.

What did you think of tonight’s show? What do you hope will happen to House this season? Leave a comment to share your thoughts!

I am so glad House is back. This was a good episode, but it left me feeling like something was missing. I have been anticipating seeing House on his own and this new direction all summer and was very surprised to see how much I missed the team. Cuddy summed it up best: Cameron would have never let him believe the man that loved the patient didn’t really know her, Foreman would have fought to prove House wrong, and Chase would have fought to prove him right. It was a good episode, but not great. I felt the Wilson/ House comedy was funny, but felt a bit forced. Something was off. Maybe the directing on this episode? I don’t know. It was still a good episode, but not the best. Maybe I anticipated this one too much. I have read that next week will be much more intense and that this week was not intended to be mind blowing. Just thought provoking and intent on showing House’s weakness in being alone. Wilson cutting out “Tide” coupons was hysterical.

I thought it was awesome! Well worth the long wait. It did feel weird not see see Cameron, Chase, and Foreman though. That part didn’t really bother me because I know that they will eventually return. I thought that Wilson was hilarious! Who knew he had it in him. He really gave House a run for his money. The broken piece of guitar in the box was so funny. Also, the janitor was really good too. Hugh Laurie, as usual, was the best. I can’t wait until next week!

the episode was great, certainly not the best, but a refreshing change nevertheless.. and it also focuses a lot more on cuddy and house together :)
anyone know where we can get our hands on the preview for the next episode??

This episode was the BEST!!!!There were lot’s of Cuddy/House/Wilson scenes and that’s all i needed.Ducklings who? Just bring Chase back and I am set for the season.
To me this episode will always be one of my favorite .There was no Cameron…… :P

I’m pretty much in agreement with nima. I was pretty certain all I needed in HOUSE was House and it turned out to be true. Naturally, Cuddy and Wilson are my choices to be with House but I’m pretty certain I STILL would have enjoyed the show if it was an hour of House in his apartment by himself. :) I really didn’t miss “the team”. Don’t know if that is because I know they’ll be seen again eventually or not. I LOL! a lot with this episode. The parts in the box scene I think was my favorite of all the “guitar hostage” storyline parts. The medical story turned out to be quite sad. It’s SO GREAT to have HOUSE back!!! :)

At last, it’s back!! I thought it was a great episode. The chemistry between House/Wilson/Cuddy was fantastic last night. The bits with the guitar were hilarious, with the added bonus of watching Hugh Laurie play it ;)

The only down side for me is I’m having serious Dr.Chase withdrawal!!

I loved this episode-so great to have House back! My only concern seemed to be the cinematography. It’s as if they were sorta trying out new things…but the scene w/ House and Wilson in the car was really badly shot, I thought, what with the claustrophobic close-ups. On the plus side, the scene in the very beginning, when the camera pulls away from the collapsed building and then focuses in on the still-bobbing hula doll was simply beautiful.

Did I see correctly? The pretty doc from the emergency room was also in season 3 finale? In season 3 finale she was the one in Cuddy’s group who suggested botox injections, and now she gave House new theories in the hallway. Both exchanges ended up with House wanting her resume btw.

I thought it was a very strong start. Every joke seemed to hit its mark, the pacing was good, and the conclusion was definitely unexpected.

I like that they’re not getting complacent and they’re trying to shaking things up, but
I’d like to second Lola’s remark re: cinematography. I noticed that too.

i have watched every seasom of house and for some reason i thought it was me but the camera seemed to be all over the place in this episode seemed like a amateur was filming it but other than that i loved the episode and the twist i think this season house and cuddy will finally get serious together

I did find the actors good but frankly not the episode itself specially the storyline and I hope the writers will not transform a Dean of Medicine into a drip ( half laid on a conference table!) so she can get serious with House. Hope they’ll be able to do it with keeping her a smart, sharp and witty character like in S1, S2 and two third of S3.

It felt so lonely without the docklings.. i never noticed what a huge part they actually played. Like them or not, they balanced out the show and created a large part of the atmosphere..

I thought the episode was okay…. But for me the season premeires are always kind of introducing the new season and getting everyone back into the show but the premeires always are not as good so I really can’t wait for the next episode…

“Alone” was awesome..I loved that Wilson was in the episode more than usual..his and House’s playfulness is one of the things that makes this show great….can anybody tell me what Van Halen song House was playing with the two handed arpeggio?

I’m watching this episode RIGHT now and so far, it’s awsome! I missed the premier on the television [which made me so sad :(] so I’m really excited that I’m getting to watch it again instead of waiting until it airs again on TV.

P.S: Cuddy looks amazing, she just glows whenever I see her. =D and they [House and Cuddy] look so much like a couple here. They seem a bit closer than in season three. =D

Welcome back to “House MD”. Finally, something good to watch again. Most of today’s television is not worth watching. “House” is very much worth watching. …..snd Hugh Laurie is always worth watching.

    Hi there!
I’m so glad House is back :D
I think “Alone” was a great season opening, but I did notice a few strange things. Or at least unusual.
Did you notice that House doesn’t take any vicodin and he seems to walk a little faster than in the previous episodes?
    What do you think?

    Regards
    Gustavo

Whoa! Gustavo is right, what happened to House’s precious Vicodin?

  • Kailey
    Sep 30, 2007 at 5:32 pm

i think somebody needs to uncover the truth. although there has been other episodes where he seems to forget the vicodin. maybe for hugh getting back into character was hard.
