House Discussion Points for “Wilson’s Heart”

May 19, 2008 by Lynn

Tonight we got to see the dramatic season finale of House. They found Amber as one of the “Jane Does” at the other trauma center and decided to lower her body temperature to give them time to diagnose her.

After a lot of second guesses, Wilson asked House to submit to a dangerous procedure to stimulate his brain into letting him remember. He did remember that he had gotten drunk at a bar and the bartender took his keys, so he called to see if Wilson could come get him and instead, Amber did. She drank a couple of drinks and they got on the bus.

It turned out that she was coming down with the flu and was taking something dangerous to counteract it. In the bus crash, she was injured so that she couldn’t get the toxic stuff out of her body and they knew they couldn’t save her.

Wilson went in and curled up next to her in bed and after kissing her, he turned off the life support machines so that would be her last thought before dying. (Very tragically romantic!)

Here are a few discussion points for you so we can get a dialog started. Leave a comment with your thoughts about the episode!

  • We found out that Kutner’s parents were killed in their convenience store when it was robbed.
  • What do you think of the fact that House was able to see the rash in his dream?
  • Were you surprised at Thirteen’s anxiety about treating Amber?
  • Were you surprised that Wilson asked House to risk his own life to save Amber’s?
  • What are your thoughts about the fact that Amber died?
  • How do you think this will affect Wilson? Will he somehow blame House for Amber’s death?
  • Wasn’t the Amber’s death scene just the saddest thing? Even if I didn’t like her character, it’s still sad to me.
  • Wasn’t the scene when House woke up cool…especially how Cuddy was there and so concerned?
  • It was interesting how each character handled the death and House coming out of the coma, wasn’t it?

at the end when chase and cameron meet foreman – don’t chase and foreman strongly dislike each other? and shouldn’t chase and cameron have been spending some quality time together? which, after their not exactly polite discussion of cameron sleeping with house, begs the question – are cameron and chase still together? i’ve been trying to figure this out for several weeks, without success

  2. jessica says:

The finale sucked! It was so sad. Heartbreaking!

  3. BritKid says:

why oh why did they have to kill amber……..
    sob sob sob…

kill 13 or something (oops. she is ‘being killed’. i forgot)

sob sob sob. cant bear to see wilson so heartbroken.

  4. Channing Strother says:

Final episode seemed very weak to me. Bring Amber back for a final few minutues to say goodbye? Come on. How many maladies allow for that? Why the hell was House getting drunk at 5:00 in the afternoon anyway? Everything utterly contrived and not saved by excellent acting.

  5. Sally says:

I was just glad that House didn’t actually cheat on Wilson; they had a nice way to explain that. I have to admit, the story in this was fine, but the previous episode (House’s Head) was done better.

  6. buffy says:

That was bloody brilliant! I was crying by the end. Huddy in season 5? The way she was crying when House was in the coma…. Too bad for Wilson, who had finally found true love. Lots of little loose ends were tied up, which is cool. The only thing I hated about it was the commercials every 7 minutes.

  7. day says:

I’ll just say that I. Love. House.
This two-part episode was extraordinary!! Best episodes of House ever!

And for all of your questions, let’s just wait and see until season 5! :)
Rumors about a roadtrip with House and Wilson! Can’t wait!

  8. bellanotte03 says:

I cried my eyes out, but upon further analysis, didn’t Amber have any relatives? Wilson had no authority to pull the plug on her.

  9. Marc says:

This was such a frustrating episode. I was just starting to like her.

  10. jumper42107 says:

i was crying at the end, too. but i’m scared, too…..when a series starts killing off characters, it is not good.

  11. LovesWilson says:

I really miss Amber.I keep watching the eppy over and over and I still can’t quit crying over it….That was so sad….Why couldn’t have been someone else….She was my favorite character ever!!!!

Maybe there will be a Huddy in season 5 and I’m hoping so…

I feel sorry for Wilson because he had found his true love and I don’t believe he was going to hurt her like he did the rest of his wives….And I don’t think she was cheating on him,I think they just assumed it.

  12. JimmyLimbo says:

Thought the finale was a little weak. No plot, too much time talking to House’s subconscious which conveniently wasted time but didn’t add to House’s logical processes at all. What’s more there was little exploration of how the team dealt with a friend being the patient. Also, from House’s Head episode surely one of the team would have been sent to look at all the crash victims as soon as it became apparent House had seen a symptom and any one of them would have identified Amber. All this was compounded by House’s subconscious leading him up the garden path. He was so sure he saw a symptom (somethign which interested him and he could work with) when all he really saw was a lost cause. I hate it when they end a season with such a lame episode. There is one but. And it’s a biggie. It’s House and therefore the acting was phenomenal and Hugh Laurie carried it in spite of a weak plot hastily scribbled together due to the writer’s strike. Good, bad or indifferent, I LOVE all episodes of House.

  13. JR says:

There were many wonderful scenes in last night’s episode — Taub hugging his wife or Number 13 facing her fears. However, no one has mentioned one of the key scenes. House cares. I was not surprised by Wilson asking House to risk his life, but the mere fact that House agreed is a fantasic bit of drama and character development. Yes, House has cared for others before (only a few times really). Still, he never cared enough to sacrifice himself. The real question is, “For whom did House sacrifice himself?” The obvious answer is Amber, but the underlying answer is Wilson. Regardless, House has the capacity to care about others even to the detriment of himself. That, my friends, was worth tuning in for.

  14. Alexander says:

In regards to Thirteen’s “being killed” – just because the test for Huntington’s came back positive doesn’t necessarily mean that she will leave the show. First off, the test could’ve been one of the those “false positives” – I realize it’s a genetic disorder and the test is generally accepted to be reliable, but come on guys, it’s television. Also, it’s my understanding that death doesn’t occur until 10-30 years after symptoms first show, which they clearly haven’t yet. The knowledge that she has the disease will help her character’s development, as the constant fear she feels will likely turn to acceptance of her fate.

  15. housefan says:

Uh….did you actually see her die? House said earlier she’d be ok. Don’t be surprised if he figures something out! Otherwise he could not live with himslef and will just degenerate further…

  16. ricky says:

Why did they have to kill Amber? How could you let go of such a beautiful woman, who adds some sarcastic humor to the show. Every cast member is important, and well I love the show, and hate the fact that they killed Amber. Heaven forbid that they let that hottie, Cuddy go too.

  17. housefan says:

I still say she might not be dead…this is the same netword that has brought Tony Almeida back on ‘24′ three times….and after that little school girl number, I doubt cuddy is going anywhere.

  18. MourningAmber says:

I truly loved the complexity Amber brought to the little friend triangle and am very bummed that she died…I actually hope housefan is right and they will bring her back, though I doubt it as this particular show scores well on the reality test for medical issues, and it is not very realistic to think that someone can bounce back after they have had their bypass machines turned off…especially given that House does not wake up until afterward (if the scenes are chronological). Well, here’s to hoping. I thought the first of the two parter was amazing and this one was equally so, though I will mourn Amber for the remainder of this show. When House actually shed a tear because he realized there was nothing he could do…then struggled with coming back to his best friend hating him. That was priceless. The human heart we all knew was there.

  19. House Viewer says:

Amber was my favorite character aside from house—-I mean of course a lot of people didn’t like her until now—as course as CTB she was made to be unlikeable, but I was so happy that they had brought her back because I knew the writers/directors had only chosen thirteen over her because more people think 13 is hot. She added a whole new level of excitement to the show, and she is a great actress. I was especially happy that it seemed that House had finally accepted her and they were going to get along. Dang all you viewers who only watch the show because there are a couple hot chicks. Yes, they’re hot, but Amber was too and she is a better actress.

    I hope the House/Wilson relationship doesn’t degenerate

  20. Joanna says:

*sigh*. I haven’t been watching house because all the little things and character traits were starting to bug me, but I got sucked into the finale.

And I hate to say it, but all the character traits just bugged me even more. This is turning into a soap opera, methinks, with people continually doing horrible and stupid things to each other.

If Cameron and House ever hook up and get happy, I’ll start watching again. Until then, HELLLOOOOO fan fiction.

    Ah well, just my thoughts.

  21. Niff says:

Another Remarcable point is that Thirteen got’s huntington, or at least, that was what we could see at the end of the episode.
I’m wondering what is going to happen to her in the next season.
    Cheers ^^

    Love this blog guys :D

  22. Aspasia says:

    - Poor Kutner! Still, his behavior isn’t explaim by this.

    - Kind weird this fact… but like Wilson said, he couldn’t have see in the ambulance

    - No much… she is a human being!

    - Yes! Very surprise! House is his best friend! But, than again, she was his a true love!

    - Was really sad, probably unnecessary, but than again, made a huge difference, and will cause more drama in the serie!

    - Wilson will be very damage! And his already blaming House!

    - I cried like a baby! Was absurdly sad! And romantic!

    - This scene was cool, his sadness and concern was all stamp in his face… but the cute thing was Cuddy holding his hand while she was sleeping, and when he woke up again, he still was holding her hand!

    - The personality of each character was explicit in the way they reacted to the death of Amber, it was interesting!

  23. Aspasia says:

    Oh… and like JR said…
    HOUSE CARES!

  24. Sebastian says:

House cried. That is the first time he showed his feelings. Brilliant Character Development. I love this show. House FTW!!!

  25. carolina says:

it was so sad!! and intense, i cried, for amber and wilson, but i also cried, because i saw house trying so hard to remember, and hurt when he knows whats happening, cause he knows that amber was truely dead, and in the end house was alone(with cuddy but i mean his feeling abaut the situation), and this wilson’s empty and hurt face, crush house very deeply.
This 4th seanson, was amazing, it was realy different from the others, at first time i felt a little disappointment, but with each chapter a new concept of “House M.D.” was growing, a soul change!!,
but i repeat, it was so so so sad

  26. Zoltan says:

One of the best episodes EVER in ANY “soap”, wonderful acting, House finally showing himself human.
Pity they wrote CTB off, she brought IMHO a nice thrill into the show, both when competing for the job and hooking up Wilson and House into this weird triangle. She was intelligent, remorseless and loving at the same time. Anne is by far the most talented actress in the cast.
    (Cuddy is still hotter though)
Both Ambers’s dying scene and House’s awakening were extremely strong, even if the episode on the whole seemed too much tear-jerking to me.

On this very string and dramatic closing of S4 the show is even more open to speculations on S5.
It should be obvious that Cuddy has a crush on House even if she desperately tries to hide it, but in this last episode we all saw how much she cares for him.
Wilson will certainly blame House for what happened to Amber even if it was not House’s fault and House tried to do everything including risking his life to save her.
I could not care less, honestly, if Cameron hooks up with House, she already said she did not miss him, and besides it would not be interesting…
Curious how they develop Thirteen in S5, she is still pretty much a bianco sheet which can bring surprises.

  27. housefan says:

Perhaps Amber was never on the bus and the whole thing was just a dream!

  28. Kailey says:

i think that it could have been someone who happened to look like amber and she is still alive… you never know with amazing shows like this… i thought that 13 had feelings for amber since she was so sad

  29. Wisenheimer says:

The character of Amber made sense in the end. The writers could have done alot more with her character during the time of her and Wilson’s relationship. She could have become a more intricate part of the hospital staff just like Chase and Cameron. They could have made her a workable part of the hospital, leaving her and Wilson room to have a relationship. I think the writer’s made a huge mistake in taking out her character when it is obvious that the one they needed to sack was 13. She is totally useless and serves as nothing more than a cheap Cameron clone (considering that Cameron was never that useful). Amber at least challenged House and Wilson and was strong enough to be equal to them. In the end at the very last scene we see for a brief fleeting moment what the possibilities would have been with Amber. The most we will get now is a kinder, gentler House, due to overwhelming guilt for taking something good away from Wilson, who never deserved being dumped on by House and his intense, unrelenting selfishness. That was the ultimate dumping by House. Wilson will have issues with this I believe…at least for half of a season. I do not see Wilson forgiving and forgetting anytime soon. Nor should he. This is also an open door for House and Cuddy to get together which is going to spoil the show. Without the sexual tension, it will do the same thing to this show that it has done to countless other good shows that went downhill the minute sex came into it between the major characters. If they pair House and Cuddy it will be the death knell for that show.

  30. Commenter says:

The finale was a bit overwhelming. The bad stuff outweighs the good stuff too much (and the medical stuff was a little bit.. off) Analysis poorly removes the admantine (I forgot the spelling) but it will lessen it. And full blood transfusion might have helped too but I guess with all the organs failing, it would have been useless.

However, the finale was really a bit too hard. 13 having the disease was good enough as a bad news for the finale….

Anyway, I hope to see House on sept.

  31. ComanchePilot says:

    * We found out that Kutner’s parents were killed in their convenience store when it was robbed.

Nice stereotype – huh? “Welcome to the quicky mart, oh, you are here to rob me – so sorry, oooh, ouch, why did shoot me?” Yes – use the accent.

    * What do you think of the fact that House was able to see the rash in his dream?

He saw it – he was attracted to her – and she to him. He noticed it. When she turned around – any normally testosterone influenced male would notice while checking out her butt.

    * Were you surprised at Thirteen’s anxiety about treating Amber?

    Obviously a lesbian thing.

    * Were you surprised that Wilson asked House to risk his own life to save Amber’s?

No – Wilson was desperate. I’d do it and you would do it

    * What are your thoughts about the fact that Amber died?

S&*t happens. She’d say the same thing. Drugs are dangerous things and you should not take an anti-viral for a cold. If it were me I’d simply do an IV – 90% of the symptoms of a cold are from dehydration. She killed herself. . . they never explained how the kidneys failed or why.

    * How do you think this will affect Wilson? Will he somehow blame House for Amber’s death?

I LOVED the Rollings Stones reference – you can’t always get what you want. Wilson will blame House – personally – what a fascinating character evolution as Wilson becomes like house, misanthropic and bitter, and House like Wilson. Amber changed him – nah. Never mind.

    * Wasn’t the Amber’s death scene just the saddest thing? Even if I didn’t like her character, it’s still sad to me.

Would ANY hospital ANYWHERE do that? I think not. Even the PResident would not get that treatment. BYPASS? she would have stroked out after only a few hours – she was there for what? 2 days? Never. Happen. Never.

    * Wasn’t the scene when House woke up cool…especially how Cuddy was there and so concerned?

Cuddy holding his hand. His face was priceless.

    7 Scotches, 2 Cosmos, $150 – paid by Amber.

Getting a cracked skull in a bus crash: $10,000

Two days of bypass for Amber: $150,000

Waking up with Cuddy holding his hand? PRICELESS

    * It was interesting how each character handled the death and House coming out of the coma, wasn’t it?

The only real surprise was Cuddy – and the depth of her emotion over it.

  32. KittyLugnut says:

Re: “. . they never explained how the kidneys failed or why. ” – ComanchePilot

the garbage truck hit the bus right where Amber was sitting. I figured she took the impact in the kidneys.

  33. Sally says:

Totally agree with ComanchePilot, lol on many points, especially the Cuddy thing. ;)

Other than that, loved the finale so much.

Great blog guys, keep going! Cheers!

  34. Grace says:

Does anyone have a photo of Cuddy holding House’s hand?

  35. housefan says:

    she’s not dead!

  36. housefan says:

    …if we remember her….

    oh wait that was Spock….

I still think she is alive!

  37. Claudya says:

I hope Amber don´t die! This serie needs LOVE

  38. Claudya says:

I hope Amber don´t die! This serie needs LOVE, AND PEOPLE IN LOVE! Please!!!!

  39. Grace says:

I think Amber is really, really, really DEAD.
I am very surprised that so many are nit-picking at this episode. I thought it was AMAZING!
Time for Hugh’s Emmy this year!!!

  40. Aideen says:

I really don’t want Amber to be dead, but be realistic…
The writers showed much more sense for nice looking story when they gave Wilson time to farewell and last kiss – it would look soooo stupid if the 5 season was like “oh, Amber, what a coincidence, we were wrong and we are happy you just came back to life”.

They won’t bring her back…. they shouldn’t have killed her!

  41. Petal says:

I loved this episode… The emotional development of House is amazing! The fact he cried—no, the fact he risked his life to save Amber (when in truth everyone knows he was doing it to try and save Wilson from heartache)—no, even the fact that he finally admitted how much Wilson means to him (and to Amber!!111one) is ridiculously awesome.

I love Hugh Laurie’s eyes; he conveys emotion so well through them. The fact he kept apologizing to Wilson was very sweet. I liked Cuddy’s caring role while House was in the coma (watching him experience that seizure is somehow really cool to watch to me—go Hugh!) and I liked how they had House and Wilson just stare at each other for a moment towards the end… House looks so surprised that Wilson is there, but also vaguely pleading… While I knew it would happen, when Wilson turned away… agh, my heart. It almost makes you wonder who suffers more.

  42. vicodinvodka says:

i watched this episode for the first time on DVD. I hated Amber. I cried for about 3 1/2 hours steady. The next day i watched them, HH and WH, again, and cried harder. I hated CB and i cried so bad when she died, how does that happen. oh well i love her character now…now that’s she’s dead!
