Was House’s Finale Emmy-Worthy?

by Lynn on May 30th, 2008

What do you think of the two-part season finale of House? Was it worthy of an Emmy nomination? Was it forgettable? How about the entire fourth season. Was it up to the standards set by the first three? Was it disappointing? Or was it the best season yet? Since we have several months (*sigh!*) to wait until season five begins, let’s discuss the season that just finished.

Personally, I have enjoyed this season as much as any of the previous seasons. I like it when a show mixes the cast up a bit and gives us a change in the dynamics. I think it keeps things fresh. But that’s just me. I like the new cast members and the fact htat the older fellows are still around, but in a different role. And I LOVED the finale!! If Hugh isn’t up for the Emmy this year, I’ll be devastated!

TVGuide.com’s Matt Roush has an opinion too. Here’s what he has to say when asked for his opinion about the finale:

Question: Is it just me, or did House seal up its nomination for Best Drama Series with that two-part season finale? Holy cow, what a whopper. TV like that is exactly why I watch TV in the first place. Not only was absolutely every aspect of the show done to perfection (writing, directing, acting, editing, music), the episode somehow managed to pull it all off without looking like an Emmy grab. It was the next step in the Gregory House progression: How hard can he push before his friends turn their backs? Of all the things House has done to push Wilson, the one that he couldn’t prevent and/or stop was the straw that finally broke the camel’s back. I don’t think anyone can argue that these final two hours were two of the best episodes to hit the airwaves all season. — Dan
Matt Roush: These were excellent episodes in a season that in my book overall didn’t otherwise measure up. So if House is nominated for best drama — which wouldn’t be a surprise given it has been in the running the last few seasons — these episodes (along with the terrific post-Super Bowl episode guest-starring Mira Sorvino) would probably be justification enough. But if the show is overlooked, despite these episodes, you won’t hear me howling. The Emmys rarely take into account the totality of a season, but House was too uneven for my taste to have earned a spot in my own top five, the power of the finale notwithstanding.

Now it’s your turn! What do you think of the finale and of the fourth season of House? Leave a comment and let’s discuss! :-)

I didn’t really think the fourth season was all that astounding. I think the writers were trying to force the team members into the plot.

But the finale! It was most certainly UNforgettable, and the best episode yet!

I think that Season 4 was very uneven. The whole idea of a “Survivor” arc was intriguing, but the execution was very disappointing. In retrospect, if they were going to to this route, it really would have been better for them to know at the beginning which three candidates they were going to end up with. The supposed ‘mystery and intrigue’ of watching the candidates getting whittled down went on WAY too long in my opinion. I also was disappointed with the final team; I didn’t like any of them at first but Kutner has finally grown on me, but I suspect that has more to do with Kal Penn’s performance and input into the character than what was originally written for him. I think Chase and Cameron are being wasted. On the other hand, I think we owe the brilliance of the finale to the writer’s strike. That interim gave the writers and producers a chance to really rethink Amber’s role and take what was a kernal of an idea for an episode (House finds himself somewhere without any idea of how he got there and unravels the medical mystery) that would have been intriguing into something heart-rending and brilliantly written and performed. Does House deserve a nod for best series? I think it’s very debatable. Does HL deserve to not only be nominated but win this year? That’s a definite yes!!!-not only for the sum of his performance for the entire run of the series so far but for the particular exellence of his work in House’s Head and Wilson’s Heart. I also feel RSL and Ms. Dudek deserve at least nominations as well.

I agree with previous posters, it was a bit uneven overall. Maybe it was due to the strike or whatnot but I did like the season finale a lot.
When that little tear trickled down Hugh Laurie’s nose… House crying honestly did you think you’d see that… ever? :)
And I also agree Cameron and Chase are being wasted, its not that I dont like the new team they are ok I just didnt warm to them at all. I think what makes Kutner stand out is that he is funny, while the rest of them are sort of bland.
Ah who knows what might change with next season.

i think the finale was emmy worthy.

about the only thing i don’t like about the show is olivia wilde and her character. it’s been bad writing ever since they decided to throw in huntingtons…and then to see that she was actually positive, was like a slap in the face!

did you see how when the whole huntingtons thing came up near the beginning, she was shaking and dropping things? where did that go for every episode since?? huntingtons doesn’t just get better, it gets worse!

i hope cameron decides to put aside her differences so house will fire thirteen and cameron can rejoin the team. she knows she wants it!!

I agree with Roush and the previous posters. Season 4 was a complete let down and was disappointing. The new team that were hired are very bland substitutes to the original team. Kal Penn is the only one who’s pulling off playing Kutner but I’ve got to say that Olivia Wilde cannot play a doctor, she’s not believable and she’s boring on screen. I don’t understand why they’ve created that character. It’s boring. And because of this they have wasted Cameron and Chase by putting them into the background.

If it weren’t for the 3 episodes mentioned, House probably wouldn’t get an Emmy nomination because the past season was definitely not it’s best, wasn’t even close to what we have seen. I wouldn’t be surprised that it doesn’t get a nomination. Hugh definitely deserves it, but the show, I wouldn’t be so sure.

13 was shaking because House slipped her regular coffee instead of her usual decaf after she freaked out at dropping a file. House was suspicious of her overreaction and suspected she had a medical condition. As he said, the explanation for the file was “people drop things”, and the explanation for the shaking was caffeine. Neither was a symptom - simply a way to lead into the discussion of her potential condition. She has not yet begun to show symptoms.

As for the Emmys… I have long since given up on awards ever being given to the people who really deserve them, but if there is any justice in the universe, House will sweep them this year. Season 4 was spotty, yes, but still very good, and the finale was brilliant. Maybe I’m biased, but I vote Best Drama for House, Best Lead for Hugh, Best Supporting for Robert, and Best Guest for Anne Dudek. Anything else would be the travesty I’ve come to expect from awards shows. We’ll see….

I loved this season. I liked it better than season 3, but season 2 is stil my favourite :)

I agree it took awhile for the new characters to settle in, but I like them better and better and defenitely want to know more about them.

Cameron and Chase are over and maybe they should be just written off the show, cause this must be very frustrating for Jennifer and Jesse.

House, Hugh and RSL should all win an Emmy in my not very objective because huge House fan opinion :)

I agree that season four was uneven. the game was carried out too long and was kind of boring. i know it’s good to shake things up but it took too long and the characters weren’t that interesting. I like Kutner and Taub but agree that 13 is the lamest character they’ve ever written. The finale was brilliant. Great acting by Hugh, RSL and Anne Dudek. As for the Emmys, who knows? Those things are so skewed.

I’m going to miss Amber a lot. And this finale made me realize how really likeable and human Wilson is. I’m glad we got to see more than his being handed back and forth from House’s “custody” to Amber’s — to see some of the real depth of Wilson’s heart.

I agree that season four was uneven — I HATED the long, drawn-out winnowing of the candidates. I think Thirteen COULD end up with a nice story arc in season five. I am hopeful, but I realize too, that every story concept eventually plays itself out, and the trick, in series TV, is to leave while the audience is still looking for more.

Oh, boy. As my dad said: “If you’re an evil character turning nice on a TV show, start looking for a new job.” They always kill them off when we are just starting to like ‘em. Damn. I really was starting to see the more human side of Amber, if you will, and I really was getting to like her. DX I was so sad when she died!
I think the writers tried to force the mystery into Thirteen’s character a bit. I am liking Kutner, but that’s probably because he is a very lively face brought onto this show. And because I love Kal Penn, and can’t stop thinking either Kumar or Taj when I see him. :D I also like Taub. He kinda seems like the bland and boring guy, but I’ve started to loooove him, especially after Don’t Ever Change. :DDDD

i think that house crying was the defining moment, the pivotal moment. this episode was a fantastic cliffhanger for the end of the season.

Based on acting alone, every person on that show deserves an Emmy.

I watched every episode as I have over the past three seasons. However, only a couple of episodes stood out for me and that doesn’t add up to an Emmy winning season. Sorry!

I think this 4th season was to messy. The new crew is a bad clone of the old one (my opinion). Here in Brazil the audience of this 4th season was the worth till now! The last episodes reminds the other seasons (1,2,3), House in good times. I don´t like this 4th season. Where are Cuddy and Cameron? They and House have a excelent chemestry. Hugs.
